kingofstolenhearts:

Today had just been one whirlwind after another, first, brief power cut in the middle of the night causing his alarm clock to go on the fritz, note to self: invest in battery operated alarm clock. Then, the coffee fiasco, and now, his boss had just thrown him in the line of fire by threatening Caesar Clown, the boss below Monet, with him.

Because he’d definitely have security throw a raving psychopath out on his ass, yep. He’d be getting death threats in the mail in no time, he could just see it now.

Then, not two minutes after she’d kicked the raving lunatic out, she’d been called up to the office, giving strict instructions to come and collect her in five minutes with some ridiculous excuse as to why she must leave that meeting at that very time because they had a lot to do and not a lot of time to do it.

Jola in accounting would probably be a good excuse he supposed, she’d made recent attempts to contact Monet about her expedition the month prior, something about expenses, he’d put the messages on her desk and of course, she’d ignored them. But true to his word, Law made his way up to the office, nodding a brief greeting to the secretary, he knocked and poked his head around the door.

Uhm, Monet, Jola’s on the line again she needs you t-“ And he was pulled inside for the third, and possibly most insane whirlwind of the day. Her hand grasped his in what he could only be described as pleading, and usually he’d just go along with it because hell he’d been through enough with this woman and he was SO close to that promotion it wasn’t worth it to not go along with it but—

<—Because we’re getting married.” >

He admittedly froze for a moment, eyes wide under the scrutiny of the main bosses and what APPEARED to be a federal agent, because the big guy smoking a cigar in a non-smoking environment without being berated for it certainly wasn’t working for them. The grip on her hand squeezed tighter, as if to say ‘the fuck have you just done you hag!?

He knew if he invalidated this, She’d be screwed for attempted fraud, because THAT was a Federal Agent and SHE was English, and she’d COMPLETELY ignored the limitations on her visa application last month to do that trip Jola seemed so fucking interested in.

It wasn’t exactly hard to connect the dots here.

<Kid, you two gettin married?> it was like the big guy could sense his discomfort and really all he wanted to do was curl up and die because why Monet, why? Why must she hurt him so? <Lookin a little tense there >

Did she find joy in ruining his life? Or… complicating it horrendously?

I… ehm… we—” he began, giving Monet a look that could either be described as one of two things, one I hate you so much or the otherCould you have chosen a better time?

To the bosses, it was quite obvious which one Law was throwing at her as they waited for him to continue, looks of amusement and slight disbelief on their faces, but, whatever would keep their best duo on top of business right?

“—Hadn’t necessarily agreed on telling anyone yet… We wanted to get everything done before the entire workforce found out… Given my ehm, promotion coming up, I personally felt it’d be inappropriate to reveal everything, Monet on the other hand obviously just couldn’t keep it in." And now she’d look like she’d blown the big secret, so all his surprise and shock had an explanation which would hopefully make that federal agent think it was legit because he really didnt want to go to jail for this woman she’d already put him through enough hell for one lifetime.

He gave another strong squeeze to her hand to let her know just how happy he was with this situation.

She felt sorry. She really really really did, but he assumed Law wouldn’t understand it and thus not be so annoyed. She was sure he hated her passionately at that moment.. but what was she supposed to do? Go back home and let Clown, the incompetent and entitled guy she had just fired, take her place? No. Not in a million years. No.

Once the meeting was over and the big bosses bought her version, despite Law’s lack-of-enthusiasm performance and they returned to her office she locked the door and decided to have a serious chat with him about all that.

— ❝ Listen, I am sorry, but there was literally nothing else I could do. You know well how hard I’ve worked to get us all where we are and how easily Clown would destroy all that. Everything I’ve worked for, and everything you’ve worked so hard for the last two years would be useless.❞

Because if she had to go back to England that meant that Law would be fired. If that worked out Law would get that promotion he had been waiting for and she would keep her job, but if it didn’t both of them would sink in the same boat.

— ❝ If this works you’ll be getting your promotion. We just have to be married until I can apply for the citizenship again and then we’ll get divorced and that’s it, we’ll move on with our lives and forget about it.❞

It sounded as the perfect plan, at least theoretically speaking. After talking to the federal agent again she realized that she had to know lots of things about Law that she didn’t know. Law knew a lot of things about her, from her favourite color to her allergies to the name of her hairstylist, but she didn’t know a thing about him, and she had all that weekend to learn it all. In Law’s hometown.
