24. (TW!) Enlisting in the armed forces
They had been childhood friends, but they grew apart with time. Last few times Monet had seen her in her house it had been because, somehow, his brother ended up dating her. She didn’t know how or why that had ended, but she would keep what she had said Doflamingo back then: she is too good for you.
For he only cared about having fun and he wasn’t going to settle for any relationship. He followed the long tradition of their family and joined the armed forces at an early age, been immediately promoted for he was just that good. Meanwhile she continued studying, being formed to become a spy, but he told her that he wanted her to be closer to him, not risking her life in an unknown destination trying to get dangerous information. Should she risk herself to die, she should at least have a platoon to defend her. And in the end, Doffy convinced her.
Monet had yet to announce that she was going to join the Marine, but she had reserved a Sergeant spot. Doffy was the First Sergeant and he knew she was qualified for the job, so he moved a few strings, as he had always done, and she got the job.
It was the 4th of July and they were back into their old neighbourhood to celebrate the day with a barbecue, as the tradition ruled, and some friends, catching up, drinking beer… the usual. Monet had heard something about Alice, he knew they had invited her to the party, but she had yet to see her blonde hair around, but she didn’t.
It was Law the one that told her that the medicine thing didn’t work out for her, he didn’t elaborate, but he left her concerned. Apparently now she had an awful debt, and she knew how merciless the system was with student loans. She was sad to hear that, she had always thought Alice would become a great doctor, so she couldn’t fully fathom what had happened.
When she finally saw her at the party she thought she would ask her, but there was no polite way to put that really, so after a while, she decided to simply drop it in the conversation.
— ❝ You know? I’ve been thinking for a while and I’ve considered enlisting in the armed forces.❞
She had to go through the IET anyway, and the salary wasn’t bad. It was better than nothing.

— ❝ So, would you like to join me?❞
