5. Defending the Earth

It was the stillness that preceeded the storm. Monet had always known that feeling very well. Perhaps too well.

Big golden eyes opened slightly, the dim light of a thousand suns reflected on her pupils. Stars that shone like a million of candles, too far for her to see the wick or to smell the burning wax, randomly -but beautifully- placed in that high-arched space cathedral.

It made her feel warm and cold at the same time, but lonely. If it hadn’t been for the incoming call, one that promptly created the hologram of her superior, Vergo, she would have had time to dwell on her current situation. But there was no time.

‘Liutenant, I’m gonna need you to get back in the bridge immediately.’ And he didn’t need to tell her twice. She got a quick shower to wake up a bit, since an hour of sleep was too little time for her to work on optimal levels, and she fixed her hair.

The doors opened automatically as she entered the bridge, and she was tempted to stop and blink when her eyes stopped on the man besides Vergo, studying the hologram of the position of the foes.

Broad shoulders, tall as Vergo, but with a green mohawk. The exact same shade of green she had. She did slow down her pace before reaching them, eyes looking at him as he turned. Sharp teeth giving her a playful little grin as if he hadn’t been arrested and suspended for gambling with some prisoners and destroying four spaceships.

At that moment Monet didn’t know if to hug him or to punch him in the nose, but in the end she just gave him a stern look. He had risked her job too with his recklessness, but he was her brother, and she knew she would forget him. Not soon probably, but she would.

‘Chief Master Doflamingo wanted him back, unless until we’ve solved this issue. You both are two of our best pilots and we are going to need all the help we can gather for this mission. Humankind depends on you both’.

Monet wished she hadn’t instantly thought that humankind was doomed. That smirk on his brother’s lips– just no.
‘I’ll leave you both to get ready. I’m gonna inform Doflamingo that Cannibal and Snowbird will be ready to leave the central starship whenever he orders it. ’

Monet awaited for their superior to leave to pinch her brother’s forearm until she erased that dumb cocky grin from his face.

am not happy with you, Barto.

But that wasn’t, definitely, the best moment to scold him.

We have to leave now and do as Doflamingo said, and you better not do anything stupid until we are done with this mission.

He better not die nor get injured, for she was planning to kill him once all that was over.
